AMNW’s response to latest government statement on adoption

‘CVAA applauds the Government’s current focus on adoption and the importance of placing more children with permanent families without delay.

CVAA as a key stakeholder is pleased to be involved in the Expert Working Group.

We will continue to contribute to achieving a refined process which encourages more adopters to come forward and ensures a robust qualitative framework which safeguards children’.

The press release from the Consortium for Voluntary Adoption Agencies follows the latest announcements from the government proposing to ‘overhaul’ the adoption assessment process as reported in the BBC news: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-16285610

As a voluntary adoption agency Adoption Matters Northwest fully supports the pledge to improve the recruitment, assessment and training processes with a system that is appropriate yet robust. As a member of the CVAA we will relish the opportunity to contribute to new proposals for change; yet are already proud to be part of a group of voluntary adoption agencies that have consistently achieved outstanding results in reducing those delays and maintaining high standards in service levels. From the 1st January AMNW will be publishing their figures regarding numbers of children placed and those key statistics on ‘timescales for assessment’, that we have met ahead of schedule. Check out our press releases in the early new year!!!

Latest National Adoption Week News

Adopters’ Charter

  • The Government has published today an Adopters’ Charter which sets out what prospective adopters can expect from adoption agencies.

http://www.education.gov.uk/childrenandyoungpeople/families/adoption/a00199762/government-launches-the-adopters-charter

  • Tim Loughton wants more people from all walks of life to come forward to adopt, and for them to be welcomed with open arms and to receive all the help and support they need from the initial point of contact right through the adoption process and, very importantly, as and when needed throughout the adoption journey itself.  He wants adopters to feel valued and respected for the chance they provide to transform a child’s life.
  • Too often we fail to recognise that adoption is built on the life-long commitment and determination of adoptive parents.  The Charter is an important step towards doing just that.

Performance tables

  • The Government has also today published tables that increase transparency around local authority performance for children in care and adoption.   The Government wants these tables to act as a challenge to local authorities to do better for the children in their care.

Recruitment campaign

  • In addition, the Government is backing a recruitment campaign led by the British Association of Adoption and Fostering and the Fostering Network.  The ‘Give a Child a Home’ campaign, in conjunction with National Adoption Week, aims to encourage more people to come forward to foster and adopt, particularly those children in sibling groups, older children and black children.
  • The ‘Give a Child a Home’ campaign website (www.giveachildahome.co.uk) provides lots of information about adoption and fostering, how they can make a huge difference to people’s lives, and advice on how to take the first step.

National Adoption Week 2011

Charity calls out for prospective adopters to Rise and Shine this National Adoption Week 2011

A Northwest adoption agency has called out for prospective adopters to think about adoption this week and consider the possibility of rising to the adoption challenge and helping a child to shine.

This year National Adoption Week runs from 30 October until the 6 November and the agency will be supporting a number of projects to raise awareness to the numbers of children needing a new family and be available to answer all of your adoption questions & queries. If you would like more information about adoption please contact the advice line on 01244 390938 or email info@adoptionmattersnw.org

Specialist adoption agency Adoption Matters Northwest (AMNW), which has an office in Chester, believes that this is the perfect opportunity to highlight the high numbers of children still in care in our region and promote how people can make a real difference.

Chief Executive of AMNW, Norman Goodwin explains: “There are over 300 children still in care in our region, and we want people to understand that there is no better way of making a difference to a child’s life than by giving them a new family and home.

“Thousands of people will be thinking about how they can give something back during National Adoption Week, and we want people to think that little bit harder about how they could really make a commitment to change a child’s life.“

Celebrating our adoptive fathers

Many new dads across the North West have recently celebrated their first Fathers’ Day after successfully becoming adoptive parents.

Adoption Matters Northwest has placed more than 120 children in new families across the North West during the past three years including new dad David Chandler* from Cheshire.

David said: “This will be my first Fathers’ Day, and is one family event that for years I dreamed about celebrating.  We had longed to start our family and after difficulties we decided to try adoption and contacted Adoption Matters Northwest just two years ago.
“It was a difficult process of course as it’s such an emotional journey especially after such heartbreak but we stayed strong and were lucky to be able to share our experiences with many social workers along with other parents-to-be. Our adoption went through just a few months ago and now we’re the proud parents of two boys.

“Fathers’ Day was a landmark for our family and am sure there are even more dads across the North West who, like me, have celebrating just that little bit more.”

David has also written an ‘Adoption Diary’ published here on the Adoption Matters Northwest website about his experiences, to help other people go through the adoption process.

Norman Goodwin said: “Fathers’ Day is a time to celebrate family – whether a new family just created or bringing generations together. While our support has helped to create new adoptive parents in our area there are still hundreds of children in care still in care in the North West that need to find loving, new homes. Now is the perfect time for people who want to become parents and make a difference in a child’s life to get in touch.”

Adoption agency joins the world of social networking

We are getting up to speed with social networking in a bid to boost enquiries from would-be adopters.

After the revamp of our website, we have now created a Facebook page and launched a Twitter account.

Our Chief Executive, Norman Goodwin said: “Although our new website offers plenty of information for prospective adopters, people who have adopted and those who want to learn a little bit more about what we do, we recognise that social media is fast becoming one of the main mechanisms that people use to communicate so we want to tap into this growing market.

“We can use Facebook and Twitter to connect with people – they can contact us easily and we can keep them up to date with all the latest adoption news.”

The agency is alsohoping to use social media to reconnect with some of the 3,500 adoptees it has placed with families over the last 60 years.

Norman added: “Our various social media facilities and website will improve our ability to make contact with our adoptees and their experiences and input to our service could benefit the next generation.”

Adoption Matters Northwest, which has offices in Chester, Blackburn and Hale (Manchester), is one of only 30 specialist adoption agencies in the UK and has one of the lowest adoption breakdown rates in the country.

Search for ‘Adoption Matters Northwest’ on Facebook and ‘adopt_mattersnw’ on Twitter.

With much to celebrate over the last three years, Adoption Matters Northwest has published a collection of articles and updates in our latest achievement report. From the Chief Executive celebrating 25 years at the agency, to our most recently retained status of ‘Outstanding’ from Ofsted, following our inspection.

We are very proud of the work we do and of our achievements despite many changes in the adoption field and a difficult financial climate. Yet as an organisation we maintain success with the commitment of our adoptive families and the professionalism and loyalty of our staff.

Though we anticipate many more changes ahead, we are always grateful to those who support us and help us continue our operations despite the challenges. We hope people will continue to support our work and hope the achievement report inspires people to do so.

The Times reports on the truth about adoption in Britain

As part of their ongoing campaign for greater understanding in adoption, The Times recently published an article highlighting the plummet in public donations to voluntary adoption agencies, the financial shortfalls in the system and the hard truth about adoption in Britain today. In a series of emotive articles this particular thought provoking piece gave some much need attention to the voluntary sector and allowed our very own Chief Executive Norman Goodwin to represent the voluntary adoption agencies.

Carol Midgely who gain unprecedented access to adoptive families, agency panels and local authorities reports on the complexities of the system and the heartening and heartbreaking realities.

Norman was a contributor to this piece and had the opportunity to highlight the difficulties faced today by the voluntary agencies. However by raising concerns we were delighted to see a very positive response to the article by the public and a promising rise in the volume of activity on the Adoption Matters Northwest website and a significant increase into the number of prospective adopter enquiries received by our offices.

Vital funds raised for our adoption agency

Mike Delap, raised in Bramhall and a dedicated blogger of all things related to Blackburn Rovers was adopted 26 years ago. Now as a relative newcomer to competitive running, he has raised hundreds of pounds for a Northwest adoption agency that placed him with his new family more than two decades ago.

Mike Delap, 27, took on the Great Manchester Run at the weekend to raise awareness and funds for agency Adoption Matters Northwest and so far has collected an impressive £450.00

Although Mike had never participated in a competitive run on this scale before he did remarkably well with a time of 52 minutes 25 seconds.

Mike said: “The run was fantastic and it was even better to do it knowing I was raising essential funds for such an important charity.

Mike maintains he is incredibly lucky to have two fantastic parents, two brothers and a sister who have welcomed me as one of their own. “Adoption Matters Northwest helped give me this fantastic upbringing and I hope by doing this I can give just a little something back.”

To add to Mike’s sponsorship, visit www.justgiving.com/michael-delap

We would like to take the time to give a massive thanks to Mike and in light of the recent article in The Times newspaper regarding the dwindling donations and public contributions to voluntary adoption agencies; we cannot stress how very grateful we are to Mike for choosing our agency to donate his sponsorship money to.

Wild Blackburn Rover Races for Adoption

On the 15th May 2011 Mike Delap will be taking part in the Great Manchester Run for Adoption Matters Northwest. The Bupa Great Manchester run is a 10km running event in central Manchester starting on Portland Street and finishing on Deansgate.

Mike, pictured with his mum, has chosen to raised vital funds for the adoption agency as it is a cause close to his heart, as he explains;

“The reason for me choosing Adoption Matters Northwest  is that I was adopted as a child and I am incredibly proud of that. I was adopted 26 years ago to a fantastic family and I am very lucky to have two great parents, two brothers and a sister who have made me one of their own. Adoption Matters Northwest are the organisation that helped me find the great life and upbringing that I have enjoyed and I am doing this to give just a little back”

Born in Wythenshawe back in 1984 and adopted at a young age, Mike settled with his new family in a village near Stockport, Manchester. Mike spent his childhood life there at school and college before flying the nest and moving to Sheffield to study at University. Still now living in Sheffield, Mike is happy and settled with his partner of 8 years and is delighted to be getting married in September of this year.

Mike who confesses to having a very unhealthy obsession with Blackburn Rovers, hence his blogging name; Wild Blackburn Rover, continues to say, “I like to think I am living proof that the services that organisations like Adoption Matters Northwest provide, actually do work! Please support me as I give just a little something back”.

We would also like to make a plea for you to support Mike through sponsorship donations. You can do so by clicking on the Just Giving link

http://www.justgiving.com/Michael-Delap

With over 38,000 participants this year’s run should be a great event to watch with family and friends, especially to cheer on Mike and boost his progress.  There are plenty of good vantage points along the course like Cheapstow Street, Great Bridgewater Street,  the halfway point near the Imperial War Museum or Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground. Alternatively why not watch the event unfold from one of three big screens at the forecourt at Manchester Central, Charity Village or Spinningfields (live from 9:00am on the race day).
